A Day Worth Celebrating!

May 7th is National Packaging Design Day – a day set aside to recognize the contributions that designers make to effective packaging design. So why is this day worth celebrating?

First and foremost, almost everything we purchase is contained in some sort of package. It is a means to safely, cleanly and efficiently transfer goods from maker to consumer. This day also recognizes the intimate relationship between packaging graphic design and branding and how they are represented to the consumer.

As designers, it is a great time to recall and refocus on the principal fundamentals of packaging. It challenges us to rise to the demand for creativity that is relevant to solving a problem. This means taking a measured risk calculated to succeed in effective customer outreach.

It is a day to celebrate your successes. For example, take some time to be darn proud of your good work. But also acknowledge the opportunity to learn so much more – from structure to design. And, don’t forget our markets are no longer confined to where we are so embrace the opportunity to work with a broad array of customers.

Use this day to set your goals for your career in package design. Decide what you have to do to improve your unique skills portfolio and set a growth path to achieve those goals. Hold yourself to a higher standard of expectation in your design execution.

Take time to give yourself a little public credit for the work you’ve done and what you have accomplished.

Lastly, share this day with fellow designers. After all, we are in this together and good packaging will be around for a long time to come.
